NumFOCUS is excited to once again participate as a mentoring organization for Google Summer of Code 2016 — our second time participating in the program! Google Summer of Code sponsors students to work full-time on open source projects during summer vacation (in the northern hemisphere), supervised by a senior contributor from the mentoring organization.

Students who want to participate in the program write a project proposal describing the work they’d like to achieve by the end of the summer. As an alternative to proposing an original project idea, students can choose a project suggested by the mentoring organization. After the application deadline, mentoring organizations choose the best applications and assign them to each position made available through Google.

Last year, NumFOCUS had three GSoC students:

  • Ian worked on DyND, a C++ library for dynamic, multidimensional arrays, adding a Cython API to make it possible for other projects to use the library more easily.
  • Piotr worked on a Django application for Software Carpentry Foundation that is helping the Foundation to run their workshops.
  • Amit worked on JuliaQuantum to add a framework for solving dynamical equations.

Each of the student projects were very successful! Amit, Piotr, and Ian have also continued contributing to the projects after the formal close of last year’s GSoC program.

We hope to have even more students participate this year! If you or someone you know would be interested in participating in the NumFOCUS Google Summer of Code program, please let us know.
